Familyscapes / Echoes
July 5 – 28, 1990
My first camera was ordered from the back of a cereal box. I used it to create albums cluttered with photos and captions that preserved memories of adolescent life. Over the years subjects expanded to include a multitude of less personal topics, but I returned to focusing on my own life when I became a mother. In fact, recording all that was happening to me and around me became a compulsion. A camera helped me navigate through the intense and surprising jumble of family life.
By studying the movements of my sons and the shifting positions of all their stuff, I could better appreciate the beautiful unpredictability of each day. The medley had imagination, intensity, and grace. It was so much more than I ever could have imagined alone. It was our own and unique family-scapes.
Thanks always to Jon, Michael, and Robert.
