In Your Face
May 2 – June 1, 1991
In Your Face looked at Britain’s perennial social divide. It was shot largely during the 1980s, provoked by Thatcherism and a polarised debate on market forces versus community values. Extreme close-ups, made spontaneously on the streets of east London, contrasted the people of The City with those in the nearby market of Brick Lane.
In the darkroom, the enlarger’s negative holder was modified to make it bigger than the negatives – hence the prints’ black borders.
The work was first exhibited at the Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, Oregon in 1991, followed by shows at Hove Museum & Art Gallery, 1993, and the Royal Festival Hall, London, 1994. A book dummy was produced at the time but no publisher could be found for it.
In 2018 an exhibition at the Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol renewed interest in the project. In Your Face was published by Hoxton Mini Press in 2020.
