Pentimento

December 7 – 30, 2006

PENTIMENTO: an artist statement

My work uses the book as an iconographic artifact, purely visual, in which the image, structure, and materials are the content. Although their pages may not turn or act like traditional books, they are the embodiment of what books mean to us. They actually are what they purport to be about. The physical presence of a book speaks to knowledge preserved and communicated. Despite the absence of written text, my work is an attempt to provide a close, intimate, and unique conversation with the viewer. The work is evidence of change, a type of historical revision – a Pentimento, reflecting on the connection to what has already been, and an ever-evolving present.

Technical note: These works are actual dimensional objects, fabricated using a variety of materials. They are relative in size to that of standard hardback novels, and the surface patinas are rusted iron.
