These photographs of hand-painted signs and murals are from a series made between the late 1980s and the end of the 1990s, largely found in north Florida, Georgia and Alabama; all were taken in the American South.
The work began as an incidental homage to the hand-painted signs artfully documented by WPA photographers and to the work of my signs-loving buddies at Blue Sky; it ultimately evolved into making forays in active search for outdoor paintings that were compelling for their aesthetic qualities as well as for the spirit they embodied.
